Rosario Murillothe vice president of Nicaragua, announced yesterday (Friday) to local television that the Congress of the Central American country decided to sever diplomatic relations with Israel due to a year into the ‘Iron Swords’ war. The conflict, the Nicaraguan government said, “is now also expanding against Lebanon and severely threatens Syria, Yemen and Iran.”
Complex diplomatic relations
Nicaragua was one of the first countries to recognize Israel during the vote on the partition plan at the UN General Assembly, on November 29, 1947.
In the 1980s, relations between the countries began to deteriorate following the state’s support for the Palestinian Authority, and in 1982, relations between the countries were severed due to the First Lebanon War. Relations between the countries were renewed 10 years later. In 2012, the president of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, hosted his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and called for the destruction of Israel’s atomic reactor. On March 29, 2017, the Nicaraguan government announced the restoration of its diplomatic ties with Israel.
Following the Iron Swords War, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a recommendation to avoid visits to Nicaragua due to the absence of an official representative of Israel in the country, and today (Saturday) the country once again announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Israel.
